The French Football Federation (FFF) officially announced today, Tuesday, July 28, 2026, that Zinédine Zidane has been appointed head coach of the French men’s national team.
Zidane succeeds Didier Deschamps, bringing to a close one of the most successful coaching eras in international football. He has been entrusted with a four-year mandate through the 2030 FIFA World Cup and will officially begin work on August 1, 2026.
The significance extends far beyond the appointment itself.
- It concludes Didier Deschamps’ remarkable 14-year tenure as France manager.
- Zidane returns to football management after leaving Real Madrid in 2021.
- The 1998 FIFA World Cup winner reportedly turned down several major club opportunities while waiting for the opportunity to manage his country.
- His contract runs through the 2030 FIFA World Cup, giving France an entire World Cup cycle to prepare under one leadership team.
According to the FFF, Zidane will oversee France’s campaign in the 2026–27 UEFA Nations League, UEFA Euro 2028 qualifying, and 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifying. His coaching staff will be announced in due course.
More Than a Coaching Appointment
France has not simply hired a coach.
France has demonstrated succession planning, leadership continuity, strategic vision, and long-term football governance.
Rather than waiting for uncertainty or crisis, the French Football Federation completed its transition immediately after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, giving Zidane four full years to build, develop, and prepare the next generation.
Zidane himself summed it up perfectly:
“The only thing I wanted to do after Real Madrid was the French national team.”
That patience, combined with France’s planning, has produced a seamless transition.
The Lesson for Nigeria
For countries preparing for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, including Nigeria, the message is clear.
Preparation does not begin when the qualification draw is released. Preparation begins the day the previous campaign ends.
France has already begun building for 2030.
Nigeria has never lacked talent. With vision, planning, continuity, and collective commitment, there is every reason to believe our journey to 2030 can be a successful one. The time to begin is now.
