As Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, marked its 65th anniversary, the institution’s enduring legacy of academic excellence and nation-building drew commendation from prominent stakeholders, including the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Benjamin Kayode Adereti.

Adereti, who attended the anniversary celebration on Monday, described the milestone as a testament to the university’s remarkable journey and sustained contributions to higher education, research, and national development.

He paid tribute to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, applauding his leadership in steering the institution through a period of academic advancement and infrastructural transformation.

According to Adereti, OAU’s continued standing among Nigeria’s premier universities reflects a culture of excellence nurtured over decades and strengthened by visionary leadership, dedicated staff, and strategic investments in both human and physical capital.

“The university has remained a beacon of knowledge and innovation, producing graduates who continue to make significant contributions across various sectors within and outside Nigeria,” he noted.

Adereti also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment of Adejare Bello as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, describing the decision as a reflection of the Federal Government’s resolve to position tertiary institutions for greater impact through experienced and competent leadership.

Beyond celebrating the institution’s achievements, the APC deputy governorship candidate congratulated recipients of awards and honours conferred during the anniversary activities, describing the recognitions as fitting acknowledgements of their contributions to the growth of the university, public service, and societal development.

He urged the honourees to continue embodying the ideals for which OAU is renowned, emphasizing that their achievements should inspire younger generations to pursue excellence, integrity, and service to humanity.

As OAU commemorates 65 years of academic distinction, Adereti said the institution remains a symbol of intellectual excellence and a critical driver of Nigeria’s development aspirations, expressing confidence that it will continue to shape future leaders and contribute meaningfully to national progress.
